What Should I Buy: a Windows PC, a Mac, or a Linux Machine?
TL;DR
There is no universal “best computer”, there is only the best one for what you do, your budget, and how much you value control versus polish. Your main choices:
- Windows PC: the most versatile and compatible, the widest hardware and price range, the best value, and the most upgradeable/repairable. The default for most people, but quality varies and you have to tidy up the bloat and privacy bits yourself.
- Apple Mac (MacBook / iMac): the best hardware, battery life, and polish, and lovely if you are already in the Apple ecosystem, at a premium price, with lock-in and almost no repairability or upgrades.
- Linux: free, private, endlessly controllable, and brilliant for reviving older hardware and for developers and tinkerers, if you are willing to learn a little and accept some app gaps.
Quick steer: most people → Windows. In the Apple world and happy to pay → Mac. Value control/privacy, or have an older PC Windows has abandoned → Linux.
Now for the more technical explanation
The honest answer: it depends on you, not on which is “best”
Every “which is best” argument online is really people with different needs talking past each other. A video editor, a gamer, a privacy activist, a student, and someone reviving a ten-year-old laptop should not buy the same machine. So the useful question is not “which is best?” but “which fits what I actually do?” Work that out first, and the choice mostly makes itself.
Buy a Windows PC if…
Windows is the sensible default for most people, and for good reasons.
- Compatibility is unmatched. Almost all software and games run on Windows, and most hardware and peripherals “just work”. If you need a specific app (much business software, most games, a lot of specialist tools), Windows is the safe bet.
- Choice and value. You can buy anything from a $400 laptop to a workstation, from dozens of makers. That competition means the best value per dollar of the three.
- Upgradeable and repairable. Desktops especially, but many laptops too, let you add RAM, swap the drive, or replace parts. It lasts longer and repairs cheaper (see the right to repair guide, and Framework as the poster child).
- Gaming. If you game, this is effectively the only serious answer.
The trade-offs: build quality and support vary wildly by brand, new machines arrive with bloatware, and Windows ships with telemetry and a push toward a Microsoft account you will want to tidy up. And the security is yours to set up, not that it is insecure, but you own the config (Defender plus the built-in hardening does the job, see the antivirus vs EDR guide).
Best for: most people, gamers, anyone needing specific Windows-only software, tight budgets, and those who want to upgrade or repair over time.
Buy an Apple Mac if…
Apple makes genuinely excellent machines, and since the move to Apple Silicon they are hard to beat on the things Apple cares about.
- Performance-per-watt and battery. Apple’s own chips give class-leading efficiency: fast, cool, quiet, all-day battery (this is the whole point of the x86 vs ARM and closed-loop ecosystems guides). A MacBook’s battery life is still a standout.
- Build quality and polish. The hardware, screens, trackpads, and the tuned macOS experience are top tier, because Apple controls the whole stack.
- The ecosystem. If you already have an iPhone and iPad, a Mac slots in seamlessly (messages, handoff, AirDrop, shared photos). That integration is a real, daily benefit. And you are not locked out on Android either, you can pair an Android phone with a MacBook and get a great experience (see the Android and MacBook guide).
- Security and support. A tightly controlled platform is harder to attack, and Macs get years of OS updates (see the most secure OS guide).
The trade-offs are just as real: you pay a premium, you accept lock-in to Apple’s world, and the machines are barely repairable and not upgradeable (soldered RAM and storage, so buy enough up front, because you cannot add it later, and see the right to repair guide). Serious gaming is largely out, and some Windows-only software has no Mac version.
Best for: people already in the Apple ecosystem, creative professionals, anyone who prioritises battery, build quality, and a polished experience, and who is willing to pay for it.
Buy (or switch to) Linux if…
Linux is the wildcard, and it is more approachable now than it has ever been. It comes in two flavours of decision: buying a machine to run Linux, or replacing Windows with Linux on a PC you already own.
- Free, private, and yours. No licence cost, no forced account, no telemetry you did not choose. You control the machine completely.
- It revives old hardware. This is Linux’s killer use right now. A lightweight Linux distro can make a slow or “unsupported” old laptop genuinely useful again, and with Windows 10 now out of support, that is a huge, timely reason to keep a perfectly good PC out of landfill instead of binning it.
- Brilliant for developers, servers, and homelabs. If you write code, self-host, or run a homelab, Linux is home turf.
- Longevity and control. It keeps getting security updates on hardware Windows and macOS would have abandoned.
The trade-offs: there is a learning curve, some mainstream apps have no native version (Adobe’s suite, some games with anti-cheat, native Microsoft Office, though there are web and alternative options, see the note-taking and Linux cloud sync guides), and occasionally hardware or driver quirks need a little troubleshooting. It is not for someone who wants to never think about their computer.
If you are replacing Windows with Linux: try it first from a USB stick (live mode) or dual-boot to keep Windows around, and start with a beginner-friendly distribution (Linux Mint is a common, gentle first step). Old PC that Windows 10 left behind is the ideal candidate.
Best for: tinkerers and learners, privacy-focused users, developers and homelabbers, and anyone reviving older or “unsupported” hardware.
Buy a Chromebook if…
ChromeOS is the fourth option, and for the right person it is the best value of all. A Chromebook runs Google’s lightweight, web-centric system, and it is cheap, simple, secure, and low-maintenance.
- Great for the basics in a browser: web, email, docs, video calls, streaming. If your whole day lives in a browser, a Chromebook does it quickly on inexpensive hardware.
- Secure and low-hassle: locked down by design, auto-updating, and very little to break or infect. Ideal for students, kids, and less-technical users, and a brilliant cheap second machine (the most secure OS guide explains why the ChromeOS security model is so strong).
- The catch: it is web-first. No full Windows or Mac desktop apps (no native Office, Adobe, or most heavy software), it leans on Google’s ecosystem, and it wants an internet connection for a lot. Many Chromebooks now run Android apps, and some run Linux apps, which stretches them further, but it is not a full desktop replacement.
Best for: budget buyers, students and kids, browser-based lives, and simple, secure, low-maintenance second machines.
A quick decision guide
- Student / office / general use: Windows for value and compatibility; Mac if you are in the Apple world and have the budget.
- Creative professional (video, design, music): Mac is the classic choice; a strong Windows workstation is the flexible, often cheaper alternative.
- Gamer: Windows PC, effectively no contest.
- Developer / homelab / server: Linux (or a Mac, which is Unix underneath and popular with developers).
- Privacy-focused: Linux for control; Mac for a locked-down mainstream option.
- Old or “unsupported” PC you already own: Linux, to give it a second life.
- Business fleet: usually Windows (manageability, Microsoft 365, Conditional Access, Intune), Macs where teams prefer them and you can manage them properly.
Do not overpay for what you will not use
A closing principle: buy for your actual needs, not the marketing. Do not pay for a workstation to browse the web, or top-spec a Mac “to be safe” when a mid model would sail through your work. Consider a refurbished machine for value, weigh repairability and longevity (a machine you can fix and upgrade is cheaper over its life), and remember the greenest, best-value computer is often a good one you already own, especially if Linux can breathe new life into it.
The short version
Pick by use, not by tribe. Windows is the versatile, compatible, best-value default and the only real gaming choice. Mac wins on battery, build, polish, and Apple-ecosystem integration, if you will pay the premium and accept the lock-in and lack of repairability. Linux gives you control, privacy, and a way to revive older hardware for free, if you will learn a little. Work out what you actually do first, and the right machine is usually obvious.
